Why Fundamentals Matter More Than Competition for Young Players

And why we’re bringing this approach to Montgomery

In youth basketball, it’s easy to believe that competition alone creates development.

More games. More leagues. More pressure.

But real growth doesn’t start with competition — it starts with foundation.

That belief has shaped every program we’ve built at Coach Deon Basketball, and it’s the reason we’re expanding our Fundamentals First approach into Montgomery.

The Problem Most Parents Don’t See at First

Many young players are rushed into competitive environments before they’re ready.

They may enjoy the excitement, but without:

  • proper footwork

  • ball control

  • shooting habits

  • confidence with the ball

the game becomes stressful instead of empowering.

We see it all the time: kids who want to love basketball, but feel overwhelmed because the basics were never truly taught.

Why Fundamentals First Exists

Fundamentals First was created as the entry point into the
Coach Deon Development System

It’s designed to slow the game down for young players and help them:

  • understand how to move

  • feel comfortable with the basketball

  • build confidence through repetition

  • learn in an environment built for growth, not pressure

Sessions are intentionally structured and short enough to keep kids engaged. Parents often tell us, “It’s already over?” — which is exactly what we want to hear.

Why This Matters Long Term

When players start with fundamentals:

  • games become easier

  • confidence rises

  • mistakes feel manageable

  • improvement becomes visible

And most importantly, kids want to keep playing.

That’s how long-term development actually happens.

Why We’re Bringing This to Montgomery

We’ve already seen success running pilot programs in Montgomery, including weekday classes and leagues. Families showed up. Players improved. Parents stayed engaged.

That told us something important:

Montgomery families value structure, clarity, and real development — not just activity.

That’s why we’re introducing a January Fundamentals First – Core Skills Class at The Church at Woodforest.

It’s a simple, focused way for young players to start basketball the right way.

What Comes Next

Fundamentals First is not a one-off class.

It’s the first step into a clear pathway that includes:

  • continued skill development

  • the Young Ballers League

  • and long-term progression inside the Coach Deon Development System

Parents are never left guessing about what’s next.
